Heat Pump or Furnace? What Actually Makes Sense for a Spokane Winter

Heat pumps have changed a lot in the last decade. Here’s an honest look at heat pump vs. furnace performance, cost, and comfort for Spokane’s climate — including why dual-fuel might beat both.

“Heat pumps don’t work in cold climates.” We hear this in almost every heating consultation, and ten years ago, it was reasonably true. It isn’t anymore, and it’s worth walking through why — along with the situations where a furnace is still the right call.

The Old Objection, and Why It’s Outdated

Older heat pumps lost heating capacity as outdoor temperatures dropped, and below roughly 25–30°F, many older units struggled to keep up on their own, leaning heavily on electric resistance backup heat — which is expensive to run. That’s where the reputation came from, and it wasn’t wrong at the time.

Cold-climate heat pumps built in the last several years are a different piece of equipment. Variable-speed compressors, improved refrigerant blends, and smarter defrost cycles mean today’s cold-climate models — from manufacturers like Trane, Carrier, Daikin, and Mitsubishi — maintain a meaningful percentage of their rated heating capacity down into single digits and, for some models, below zero. How a Heat Pump Actually Heats Your Home

A heat pump doesn’t generate heat the way a furnace burns gas to create it — it moves heat. Even in cold outdoor air, there’s thermal energy present, and a heat pump’s refrigerant cycle extracts it and concentrates it indoors (running the same cycle in reverse for cooling in summer). Because it’s moving heat rather than creating it through combustion, a heat pump can deliver roughly 2–4 units of heat output for every 1 unit of electricity it consumes — a coefficient of performance that a standard electric resistance heater or even a high-efficiency gas furnace simply can’t match on paper.

Where a Furnace Still Wins

A gas furnace generates heat through direct combustion, and it does so at a constant, high output regardless of how cold it is outside. On Spokane’s coldest nights — the handful of days each winter when temperatures drop into the single digits or below zero — a furnace doesn’t lose capacity the way any heat pump, even a good cold-climate one, eventually will. If your priority is maximum output on the worst night of the year with the least equipment complexity, a furnace remains a straightforward, reliable choice, and gas heating costs can still beat electric heating costs depending on current utility rates.

The Option Most Homeowners Haven’t Considered: Dual Fuel

Instead of choosing one or the other, a dual-fuel (hybrid) system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup. The system runs on the heat pump for the majority of the heating season — typically down to somewhere in the 25–35°F range, depending on how it’s configured — because that’s where a heat pump is at its most efficient relative to gas. Once outdoor temperatures drop below that changeover point, the system automatically switches to the furnace for the coldest stretches.

The result is that you get the heat pump’s efficiency for the 80-90% of the winter that isn’t brutally cold, and the furnace’s raw output for the days that are. For a lot of Spokane homes — especially ones that already have a gas furnace and just need cooling added — converting to dual fuel by adding a heat pump can be a smarter move than a straight AC replacement.

What About Cooling?

This is where the heat pump conversation gets easier. If you’re replacing a furnace and considering adding air conditioning at the same time, a heat pump does double duty — it’s your AC in summer and your primary (or backup-assisted) heat in winter, in one piece of outdoor equipment instead of two. For homes without existing central air, this is often the more cost-effective path versus installing a standalone AC unit and keeping the furnace as the sole heat source.

Real Talk on Cost

Heat pumps generally cost more upfront than a comparable furnace alone, because you’re buying equipment that does both heating and cooling. But run the comparison over the life of the system, not just the purchase price:

  • Upfront: Furnace-only replacement is typically cheaper than a heat pump install.

Noise, Comfort, and the Details People Forget to Ask About

Cost and efficiency dominate this conversation, but a few practical differences matter day to day. A furnace running at full output tends to produce noticeably warm air in bursts, with the system cycling on and off. A heat pump, especially a variable-speed model, tends to run longer at lower output more often, producing steadier, more even temperatures with less of the noticeable on/off swing — some homeowners love this, others who are used to a furnace’s forceful blast of hot air find it takes adjustment. Outdoor noise is comparable between a modern heat pump condenser and a standard AC condenser, both well within typical residential noise ordinances. If you’re sensitive to equipment sound, ask to hear the specific outdoor unit model in operation, or check its published decibel rating, before committing.
